Rugby union in Spain is a growing team sport with over 200 clubs across the country. The national side has played at the 1999 Rugby World Cup and is considered one of the stronger European nations outside the Six Nations Championship.
The Spanish Rugby Federation is the governing body, founded in 1923, and joined the International Rugby Board in 1988. Rugby is mainly played in three areas of Madrid, the Spanish Basque Country, and the region of Catalonia particularly around Barcelona.
Ladies and youth rugby is also widely played along with beach rugby. There are various rugby sevens tournaments in the country, including the Benidorm Sevens which is held in May each year
Spain continues to be popular with touring sides from the UK due to its climate and good transport and cultural history.
